Miss Duncan

Year 1 teacher

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children all seem to have had a really good Christmas and are ready for more learning. This letter provides some information about the curriculum areas being studied this term.

The children will be covering several English units of work this term. These will include Traditional Tales, poems and information texts and will be linked to the topic ‘Animals’. Throughout these units of work the children will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills, they will get the chance to do some drama in class, and will be given a variety of writing opportunities. The Maths areas we will be covering this term will include Addition and Subtraction, Place Value, and Measurement focusing on Length, Height, Weight and Volume.

Science: Animals – This unit introduces children to a variety of different animals. Children will be learning to identify different animals and classify them based on their features. The children will also be learning more about how their bodies work, including different body parts and senses.

Topic: This term our topic is ‘Animals’. During this topic children will be using their knowledge from science to predict and understand where animals live and how they are adapted. The children will also be using their knowledge of animals to create artwork. They will learning about different techniques including collage and computer programs to create their own artwork.

P.E : Monday and Tuesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) in school on these days. This term we are developing our games skills, therefore, the children will be working outside and must have tracksuit bottoms and a jumper to ensure they are warm enough as the weather gets colder.

Water Bottles: Please can all children have a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading: Reading in Year 1 will continue as it has done last term. Please make sure your child brings their book bag into school every day. Once your child has finished their reading book please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. This term, your child will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills through reading and comprehension lessons or guided reading in a small group, with an adult to support.

Homework: Homework will continue to be sent home on a Friday. This will be English/Phonics or Maths based. Once homework has been set, children have 1 week to complete it. In addition to this, children will also continue to have spellings set each week, related to what they have learnt in phonics during the week. These will be sent out on a Friday and tested on the following Thursday.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see me at any point.
