Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children all seemed to really enjoy our trip to the zoo last term and have made a good start to the summer term already. This letter provides some information about the curriculum areas being studied this term.

Topic : This term we have two topics each lasting a half term. The first one is titles ‘Even the Queen…’ Each week our topic will have a different focus for example, where she lives, the Royal family etc. Throughout our topic this term the children will cover Geography focusing on the UK and especially London and History where we will be looking at the lives of significant people in the past linking this to the Royal family. There will also be plenty of art and design technology opportunities which I’m sure the children will thoroughly enjoy. As part of the topic we will be celebrating the royal wedding therefore we are going to ask the children to come to school wearing red, white and blue the day before the wedding.
The second half of this term will be based on Pirates. Throughout this topic we are going to look at treasure maps, famous pirates and explore life on a ship. The children will have the opportunity to design their own pirate flag and costume as well as acting out a pirate battle. Finally the children will design and make their own pirate ship. The topic will end with a pirate day where the children will dress up and complete a range of pirate activities.

The children will be covering several English units of work this term which will link to our topic theme. We will be developing our story writing skills, letter writing and information text. Throughout these units of work the children will also have the opportunity to develop their reading skills and they will get the chance to do some drama in class. This term we will be focussing on using question marks and exclamation marks in our writing as well as correctly joining our sentences with and.

The Maths areas we will be covering this term will include Number and Place value, money, weight and volume. This term we are aiming for the children to be confident in counting forwards and backwards to 100 from any number and to be able to recall their number bonds and number facts to 10. Where possible could you practise these skills at home please.

Science: Everyday materials- Through this unit the children learn to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. The children will identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. They will be describing and sorting materials based on their simple physical properties.

P.E : Tuesday and Wednesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) in school on these days. This term we are developing our dance and athletics skills.

Water Bottles and Sun hats: Please can all children have a sun hat and a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading in Year 1 will continue as it has done last term. Please make sure your child brings their reading folder into school every day. Once your child has finished their reading book please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. It is our aim that an adult will read with your child every week. We are now doing Guided Reading in Year 1. This is where children learn to read in a group with an adult. In addition to this your child will have the opportunity to further develop their reading skills during adult led activities within class. It is really important that the children are reading regularly at home to practise their reading skills. We are encouraging them to read at least 3 times a week please could you continue to support us with this. As an incentive we will be rewarding those children who are putting the effort in at home.

Homework: We have decided to change the style of homework for this term. The children will be given 5 activities to complete. They are able to do them in any order; ideally they should aim to complete one a week and colour the task box once completed. We will collect all completed tasks on Friday 25th May. In addition to this the children will also continue to have spellings set each week. These will be given out every Friday and they will be tested on these within their phonics groups the following Wednesday.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see one of us at any point.
