Year 1

Welcome back!

We hope that you all had an enjoyable Christmas, with plenty of time to relax and have fun!

On our class page we have included some information about our learning for this term and also the knowledge organisers that we will use in our topics. These will enable you to support your child with their learning, by informing you of the knowledge and vocabulary that we will cover.

Maths

This term, children will be continuing their work on number with Mrs Huxley. This will including looking at number sequencing, number bonds to 20, addition, subtraction and place value. Mrs Hubbard will be teaching a topic on shape, including recognising and naming shapes and describing their properties. This work will cover both 2D and 3D shapes.

English

This term we will be using the story of ‘The Tiger Who Came To Tea’. We will continue to work in small groups and will complete activities such as ordering the story, describing the characters and writing our own stories. We will also use the text as a basis for understanding and writing instructions.

Reading

Your child will continue to bring home two reading books – these will be changed on a Friday. One book will be one that we have read in class whilst the other will be a new book that they haven’t read before.

Reading really is the core of everything that we do at school so please could you hear your child read as many times as possible throughout the week – we do ask for a minimum of 3x per week please.

Every time your child reads ten times at home, they move onto a different Superhero in class. They are all aiming to reach 100 reads!

Science

This term our Science topic is animals including humans. Throughout this unit we will be learning to identify and name a variety of common animals,  describe and compare the observable features of animals from a range of groups and identify and group animals according to what they eat. We will also be learning to name and locate parts of the human body, and begin to make suggestions about what some parts of the body do, name the 5 senses and the part of the body they are related to and explain how they use each of their senses.

Geography

This term our Geography work is locality work based on ‘All About Me’. We will talk about routes familiar to the children (for example from their home to school), familiar places and the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We will also explore simple maps and plans.

D&T and Art

In DT we will be making a moving story book and in Art we will be creating 3D sculptures.

P.E.

Mondays and Fridays. Please can children come into school wearing their P.E. kit on these days.
