Year 1 teacher

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children all seemed to really enjoy our trip to Chester Zoo last term and have made a good start to the summer term already.  This letter provides some information about the curriculum areas being studied this term.

Topic: This term the topics will be ‘Kings and Queens’ for the first half-term and ‘Pirates’ for the second half-term.

Kings and Queens:

This topic will focus on the UK, including countries, capital cities and surrounding seas. Following on, the children will learn about what a monarch is and does, as well as looking at a few famous monarchs from history.

Next half-term our topic will be based on Pirates. Throughout this topic we are going to look at treasure maps, famous pirates and explore life on a ship. The children will have the opportunity to design their own pirate flag and costume as well as acting out a pirate battle. The children will also sample some famous hardtack biscuits. Finally the children will design and make their own pirate ship. The topic will end with a ‘Pirate Day’ where the children will dress up and complete a range of pirate activities.

The children will be covering several Engish units of work which link to the topic theme. We will start by looking at ‘The Queen’s Knickers’ followed by ‘Katie in London’ and ‘The Tooth Fairy’s Royal Visit’. Throughout these units of work the children will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills, they will get the chance to do some drama in class and will be given the opportunity to write in a variety of different styles.

The Maths areas we will be covering this term will include Multiplication and Division, Fractions, Position and Direction, Place Value within 100, Money and Time. This term I am aiming for the children to be confident in counting forwards and backwards to 100 from any number and to be able to recall their number bonds and number facts to 10. Where possible could you practise these skills at home please.

Science: Plants - Through this unit the children will learn what a plant is and what they need to grow. We will be growing our own plants in school to investigate how plants grow. We will also be focusing on the different parts of a plant their uses.

P.E : Monday and Tuesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) in school on these days. This term we are developing our dance and athletics skills.

Water Bottles and Sun hats: Please can all children have a sun hat and a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading: Please make sure that your child brings their reading folder into school every day. Once your child has finished their reading book please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. The aim is that an adult will read with your child every week, in a guided reading session as a part of a group, or individually.

Homework: This term, there will be a change to the format of the homework. The children will be given 5 activities to complete. They are able to do them in any order; ideally they should aim to complete one a week and colour the task box once completed. Please return completed tasks by Thursday 23rd May. In addition to this, the children will also continue to have spellings set each week. These will be given out every Friday and they will be tested on these within their phonics groups the following Thursday.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see me at any point.
