Reception class teacher

4 September 2019

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children have made a good start to Year 1 and have settled really well. We wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of what will be happening in Year 1. Throughout the year the children will be taught using a variety of different methods. These include: whole class teaching, teacher led activities, independent activities and continuous provision that encourages learning through play.

Our first topic is Superheroes, which the children are very excited about.  Our story will be ‘Supertato’ By Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet. The children will be receiving video messages and letters from a superhero who will give them a range of missions to complete. If they complete these missions they will be rewarded with a superhero party! These missions will include designing a superhero mask, to find the hidden superheroes in the 4 countries and capitals of the UK and to understand different weather types where superheroes live. This term we will also be linking our Literacy work to our topic, allowing us to focus on a range of stories based on different superheroes.  Through this we will be practising writing in full sentences which includes finger spaces, capital letters and full stops as well as developing our understanding of adjectives.

During the term, we will also be exploring the differences between the four seasons including the types of weather associated with each season and how this can affect us, as well as how the length of day alters with each season. In addition, we will be learning about the different parts of plants, creating our own grass heads and planting seeds.

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value, addition and subtraction of numbers up to 20, number bonds to 10, properties of 2d and 3d shape as well as solving one step problems. We aim that by Christmas all children will be confident in using numbers to 20 in a variety of ways.

P.E :  Monday and Wednesday - Can all children please have full PE kit in school on these days.

Water Bottles: Please can all children have a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading: As reading is central to the children’s learning it is really important that they practise on a regular basis in order to make progress in all subject areas. Your child should read at least 3 times a week. Please could you indicate in their reading diary when they have read and how well they have done. We will continue to change books on Mondays and Fridays. This year we have superhero readers and every time your child reads 10 times they will move onto a different superhero on our classroom display. Similar to in Reception, when your child reaches Superman (100 reads) your child will choose a book to keep.  I will be sending home a year 1 word wall (common exception words) and information about this will be in another letter.

Spellings : The children will continue to be taught Phonics daily. They will be set spellings each week. 3 words will be based on the sound we have been learning that week, 2 will be based on Year 1 focus words (common exception words) that they need to be able to read and spell by the end of the year. The spellings will be given out every Friday and they will be tested on these the following Wednesday. Initially homework will not be set as we would like there to be a strong focus on reading and spellings at home.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see me at any point smiley.
