Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children all seemed to really enjoy our trip to the aquarium last term and have made a good start to the summer term already. This letter provides some information about the curriculum areas being studied this term.

Topic : This term our topic is based on Pirates. Throughout this topic we are going to look at treasure maps, famous pirates and explore life on a ship. The children will have the opportunity to design their own pirate flag and costume as well as acting out a pirate battle. The children will also sample some famous hardtack biscuits. Finally the children will design and make their own pirate ship. The topic will end with a pirate day where the children will dress up and complete a range of pirate activities.

The children will be covering several Literacy units of work this term which will link to our topic theme. We will start by looking at ‘The Night Pirates’ followed by ‘ Cats Ahoy’ and ‘Pirates love underpants’ Throughout these units of work the children will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills, they will get the chance to do some drama in class, and will be given a variety of writing opportunities. This term we will be focussing on using question marks and exclamation marks in our writing as well as correctly joining our sentences with and.

The Numeracy areas we will be covering this term will include Number and Place value, money, weight and volume. This term we are aiming for the children to be confident in counting forwards and backwards to 100 from any number and to be able to recall their number bonds and number facts to 10. Where possible could you practise these skills at home please.

Science: Everyday materials- Through this unit the children learn to distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made. The children will identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water and rock. They will be describing and sorting materials based on their simple physical properties.

P.E : Tuesday and Wednesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) in school on these days. This term we are developing our dance and athletics skills.

Water Bottles and Sun hats: Please can all children have a sun hat and a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading in Year 1 will continue as it has done last term. Please make sure your child brings their reading folder into school every day. Once your child has finished their reading book please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. It is our aim that an adult will read with your child every week. We are now doing Guided Reading in Year 1. This is where children learn to read in a group with an adult. In addition to this your child will have the opportunity to further develop their reading skills during adult led activities within class.

Homework: Following the success of last term’s style of homework we have decided to continue with this format. The children will be given 5 activities to complete. They are able to do them in any order, ideally they should aim to complete one a week and colour the task box once completed. We will collect all completed tasks on Thursday 25th May. In addition to this the children will also continue to have spellings set each week. These will be given out every Friday and they will be tested on these within their phonics groups the following Wednesday.

This term the children are going to complete a pirate challenge. They will need to fill their treasure chest with gold coins. To earn a gold coin they need complete a challenge. In total there will be 10 challenges all based on different areas of learning. Every Friday a new challenge will be sent home for the children to complete. It needs to be returned to school by the following Friday for the children to collect their coin. The challenge will start Friday 28th April.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see one of us at any point.
