Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children have made a good start to Year 1 and have settled really well. We wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of what will be happening in Year 1. Throughout the year the children will be taught using a variety of different methods. These include: whole class teaching, teacher led activities, independent activities and continuous provision that encourages learning through play.

Our first topic is Superheroes, which the children are very excited about. They will be entering Superhero Training Camp where they will have to complete a range of missions in the hope of becoming superheroes by the end of the term. These missions will include deciding where a superhero would live, designing and making food that superheroes would eat and locating different villains using a map of the world and a UK map. This term we will also be linking our Literacy work to our topic, allowing us to focus on a range of stories based on different superheroes. Through this we will be practising writing in full sentences which includes finger spaces, capital letters and full stops as well as developing our understanding of adjectives.

During the term, we will also be exploring the differences between the four seasons including the types of weather associated with each season and how this can affect us, as well as how the length of day alters with each season. As part of this we will creating a class weather map to track the weather patterns around the UK and develop an understanding of basic symbols on a map. In addition, we will be learning about the different parts of plants, creating our own grass heads and planting seeds.

In Maths, we will be focusing on counting, addition and subtraction of numbers up to 20, number bonds to 10, properties of 2d and 3d shape as well as solving one step problems. We aim that by Christmas all children will be confident in using numbers to 20 in a variety of ways.

P.E : Tuesday and Wednesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (please see school newsletter for details) in school on these days.

Water Bottles: Please can all children have a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading: As reading is central to the children’s learning it is really important that they practise on a regular basis in order to make progress in all subject areas. Your child should read at least 3 times a week. Please could you indicate in their reading diary when they have read and how well they have done. Once your child has finished their reading book please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. It is our aim that an adult will read with your child every week. This could be either 1-1 reading, group reading or our continuous provision activities. We are also launching an exciting reading challenge please see attached letter for details.

Homework: Homework will be sent home on a Friday. This will be a Maths piece one week and an English piece the following week. Your child will be given separate books for each of these subjects. Homework will be due the following Friday.

Spellings : The children will continue to be taught Phonics daily. They will be set spellings each week. 5 words will be based on the sound we have been learning that week, 2 will be based on Year 1 focus words (common exception words) that they need to be able to read and spell by the end of the year. During the test there will also be a mystery word each week which will be based on the phonics sound they have learnt but the children will not have learnt at home. The spellings will be given out every Friday and they will be tested on these the following Wednesday.

If you have any queries please feel free to come and see either one of us at any point. Mrs Swindley will be teaching every Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Crimes will be teaching Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Miss Averill will be supporting the children every day and Mrs Taylor will also be working with us every Wednesday.
