Dear Parents/Guardians,

The children all seem to have had a really good Christmas and we have loved hearing all about what they have done and their presents. They have returned to school with a great attitude and are really ready for more learning. This letter provides some information about the curriculum areas being studied this term.

The children will be covering several Literacy units of work this term. We have started the term exploring Rumble in the Jungle, where we have been learning all about rhyming words. We will then be looking at the story Lost and Found. Using this text the children will have the opportunity to develop their reading skills, they will get the chance to do some drama in class and will be given a variety of writing opportunities. We will also be looking at recounts and information texts linked to our topic of animals. Throughout the whole term we will focusing on improving our handwriting ensuring correct letter formation and size. Maths areas we will be covering this term will include Number and Place value, time, 2-D and 3-D Shape, Counting and Money, Fractions and Position and Direction. We will be continuing to practise our number bonds to 10 and introducing number bonds to 20 as well as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Science: Animals, including humans – Throughout this unit the children will learn how to identify and name a variety of different animals including: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They will also learn to identify, name and draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

Topic : This term our topic is ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ where we will be learning about different animals around the world and the different habitats that they live in. To support our learning we are planning a class trip to Chester Zoo towards the end of the term. In preparation for this visit we will be exploring a map of the zoo ensuring we have a good understanding of the basic symbols on a map. As part of our Design Technology work we will be designing and making our own junk model animal. In order to do this could you please send into school cardboard boxes, plastic bottles and anything else that you feel we could use. On Wednesday 28th March we will be celebrating the end of our topic with a special animal day. For this we would like the children to come dressed as an animal.

Reading Challenge: For the first half term we would like the children to read a book of their choice and then create their favourite character either through a drawing or model. They will then need to either add labels or write several sentences to tell us what the character is like and why they have chosen them. All entries should be brought into school by Friday 9th February.

P.E : Tuesday and Wednesday - Can all children please have full PE kit (t-shirt, shorts and pumps) in school on these days. This term we are developing our dance skills.

Water Bottles: Please can all children have a named water bottle in school so they can use the water fountain throughout the day.

Reading: Reading in Year 1 will continue as it has done last term. Please make sure your child brings their reading folder into school every day. Once your child has finished their reading book, please remind them to put their book into the changing basket in class so it can be changed that day. It is our aim that an adult will read with your child every week. For some children this will be through weekly Guided Reading which is where the children develop their reading skills within a group. In addition to this, your child will have the opportunity to further develop their reading skills during adult led activities within class.

Mystery Reader: This term we would like to introduce Mystery Reader each week. This will involve a parent or grandparent coming into school to read a story of their choice to the class. We are planning to do this every Thursday at 2.50 p.m. If you would like to sign up for a slot, please speak to one of the Year 1 team. Remember it is a surprise for the children so don’t let your child know you are coming. Our aim is to continue to encourage the children to have a love of reading by listening to a variety of stories read by a number of different people.

Homework: Homework will be sent home on a Friday. This will be a Maths piece one week and an English piece the following week. Your child will be given separate books for each of these subjects. Homework will be due the following Friday.

If you have any queries, please feel free to come and see either one of us at any point.
