At Millfields Primary School, we believe that reading is at the centre of learning and we aim to develop reading skills with our pupils to enable them to have access to all other areas of our rich and varied curriculum, become confident, fluent and independent readers and to promote reading for pleasure and enjoyment.
We have a structure approach to the teaching of reading and use a wide range of reading materials and teaching methods to help children learn to read in a way which meets their needs and challenges them appropriately.
Across the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, we teach phonics using ‘Read Write Inc.’ This is a structured daily phonics programme which is supported by a wide range of reading material which reinforces the children’s learning.
In Key Stage 2 we use Accelerated Reader which is a reading programme designed to encourage pupils to read widely and independently whilst allowing staff to monitor progress and provide support where necessary.
In both Key Stages our aim is not only for the children to read a text fluently but to develop their understanding and comprehension skills which we achieve through structured reading lessons and in depths discussions with the teacher.
We acknowledge and value the important role played by family in supporting children’s reading development at home, and we support parents to ensure that they are part of their child’s reading journey.
We are committed to all of the aims outlined above and endeavour to achieve these by ensuring that reading is made, and kept as, a high priority and throughout the school. We have a rich collection of published books to encourage the children’s desire to become readers and provide a range of experiences and opportunities to promote reading.
