At Millfields, we believe children should be fluent in the fundamentals, able to solve problems and reason mathematically. We also work very hard to ensure the children have a positive and confident attitude towards Mathematics.

To ensure our children are fluent in the fundamentals we use Big Maths, which focuses on these key areas within mental starters. The children are also expected to complete a test every fortnight to track their progress against these key areas. We also have clear expectations of what number facts the children should learn its year.

Problem solving and reasoning is a central aspect of our teaching and occurs within daily maths lessons. A range of strategies are taught to the children allowing them to develop a systematic approach and to identify patterns and trends. To assist, the children are also taught a concrete, pictorial and abstract approach, allowing them to fully understand process and techniques.
