Miss Davenport - Year 6 teacher
Welcome back to school year 6.
It is so lovely that we are coming back to school after the last 8 weeks of home learning. You and your children have been truly incredible over this strange time so thank you for your support and a big thank you to all the hard work the children have been putting into their home learning.
We have decided as a school to use a themed approach to learning which we will use to base our teaching of English, History, geography, Art and DT. As we are going to be learning about evolution we will be using the book Darwin's Dragons by Lindsay Galvin in our learning. We will also write a discovery story based on the book , 'Darwin An Exceptional Journey'. During this topic we will be looking at the Galapagos islands, South America and all the incredible wildlife which call these places home. I have attached a topic web with some of the learning that will be happening in class as part of this topic.
We will give the children a book to take home this week. Please read with your child at least 3 times per week and sign their diaries to reflect this. I check diaries every Friday so please make sure children bring these in. They can still take the accelerated reader quizzes (the link to this is on the home learning page). Obviously, the more you can read with them the more beneficial it will be for both their reading and writing skills. We will continue witht the challenge of '20 books to read in 2020/21' to try and encourage the children to read a range of books at home, we have said we will give out some team points to motivate them with this.
We will continue to use the White Rose Maths scheme for our maths this year. I will also be focussing some of the learning on mathematical skills which are required for high school. We will also review some of the learning that has taken place at home to make sure children feel confident in these areas.
Please can you support your child and ask them to focus on their times tables at home using Times Tables Rockstars as this will be really beneficial to them when looking at long multiplication, division and fractions later on.
Our topic for this term is evolution. Through class discussions and investigations children will be given the opportunity to:
- recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago
- recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents
- identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution
PE will be taking place on Wednesday afternoons with me and Thursday mornings with Premier Sports. Please can children wear their PE kits to school on these days.
For homework, we would like children to read 3 times a week, go on Times Tables Rockstars 10 times a week and practise their spellings for the weekly quiz on Friday.
Please find attached to this page Mr Parish's letter about the waterpark and a powerpoint with details regarding this.
At the moment, we ask that children only bring their book bag, packed lunch and a water bottle to school.
If you need to ask me any other questions, please email me or contact the office to book an appointment.
